Solution for iTunes crashes on Windows 8 Pro (x64)

Technology, Windows Sep 12, 2013

I have recently bought an Alienware 17″ for work (yes, for work, not playing games….); one of the issues I have to solve was iTunes does not seems to like the latest OS from Microsoft…  Well, who doesn’t?

I have tried several options like running it as true admin and switching different compatibility modes, but none of them worked; then, I did a quick lookup, and it seems that the Apple software requires its support environment to run in the background for the leading software to kick in…  If you work with the JAVA program with lots of external JAVA services in the experience, you will know what I meant…

Anyway, the way to fix it is to provide iTunes where the support files are in the environment path, so:

  • Right Click on the “Computer” then select “Properties“
  • Click on the “Advanced system settings” on the left hand side
  • Click on the “Advanced” tab
  • Click on the “Environment Variables“
  • Select Variable “Path” under “System variables“, then “Edit“
  • Insert the following line as it is at the end of the string without the opening and closing quote(“):

“;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support”

  • Click on “Ok“, then “Ok“, and “Ok” again…
  • Enjoy!
