Spiritual Depression – What is it?
Christianity Apr 24, 2010
Here is a summary of the book by Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones called “Spiritual Depression”, which my pastor recommended as I have been struggling with my hand injury and other personal issues for the last two months.
We human beings suffer from depression from time to time, and most of the time, we will get over it as time goes by. However, depression caused by a sudden illness, death, or relationship breakdown can scar us for an extended period, sometimes for the rest of our life.
But how can we Christians suffer from this kind of deep depression? Why are we unhappy when we hold our future salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ. The cause of all this is our unbelief and lack of faith.
Dr Lloyd-Jones (a trained medical physician himself) provided a quite detailed analysis of the difference between the view of our inner self from the secular worldview and the biblical view, which he divided into sins, regrets, fear of the future, feeling, work, disciple, trials…
He points out most spiritual depression is caused by not having a good grounding in scripture and lacking a Christ centred mind when it comes to term with the crisis.
The best cure is to learn how to walk with God and live as a Christian wholeheartedly, with conviction and confidence, to receive the joy from peace with God.
